Karnataka has been witnessing intense pre-monsoon showers, leaving residents reeling under the impact of unrelenting rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning, forecasting continued rainfall across various parts of the state over the next five to six days.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rain are expected in multiple districts of the state from today until May 28. While Bengaluru may see lighter rainfall, heavy downpours are likely in coastal, Malnad, and northern regions of Karnataka. Consequently, an Orange Alert has been issued for these districts from today through May 26.
The forecast also indicates very heavy rainfall over Konkan and Goa from May 22 to 24, and across the Karnataka coast on May 24. Widespread heavy rains are expected over Kerala and Karnataka until May 28. The southern parts of the Lakshadweep Islands may also witness thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h, the IMD added.
In light of the torrential rains, the district administrations of Udupi and Uttara Kannada have imposed a complete ban on fishing activities. Large fishing boats that had ventured into deep sea waters are now returning, with some already anchored along the coast. Although the fishing season was officially scheduled to continue until the end of this month, the severe weather has led to its premature end.
Orange Alert in Chikkamagaluru
Chikkamagaluru district is also bracing for heavy rainfall, with an Orange Alert issued from May 23 to May 27. The region experienced continuous downpours for the past 15 days, followed by a brief two-day respite. However, the IMD now predicts another spell of intense rain for the next five days.
Not just the hilly Malnad region, but even the plains are expected to receive significant rainfall. In response, the Chikkamagaluru district administration has declared a high alert, urging residents and local authorities to take necessary precautions.
