Dynamic West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran has announced his retirement from international cricket at just 29, delivering a major blow to a team striving for a white-ball resurgence. Pooran, the most-capped West Indian in T20Is with 106 matches and the leading run-scorer with 2,275 runs, made his debut in 2016. Despite never playing Test cricket, he had a significant impact in limited-overs formats, briefly captaining the side in 2022.
His leadership stint ended after West Indies’ early exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Pooran, who requested a break from international duties recently, confirmed his decision via Instagram, calling it an emotional but proud moment. Cricket West Indies acknowledged his influence, calling him a “world-class player and game changer.”
Despite stepping away, Pooran affirmed his enduring love for West Indies cricket. His absence leaves a void ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, especially in the middle order.
