India has detected a total of 163 cases of the newly emerging COVID-19 variant XFG, as per the latest data from INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium). First identified in Canada, the recombinant XFG variant has rapidly spread across several countries, raising global concern.
In India, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of cases (89), followed by Tamil Nadu (16), Kerala (15), Gujarat (11), and six cases each in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Meanwhile, India’s active COVID-19 case count has surpassed 6,000, with 769 new cases recorded in the past 48 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry’s update released on Sunday. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely amid concerns over the new variant’s transmissibility.
