Liverpool faced disappointment in their quest to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League as Manchester United‘s resolute defense held them to a goalless draw at Anfield on Sunday.

This fifth draw of the season sees Liverpool slip to second place with 38 points, trailing Arsenal by one point. The upcoming clash with Arsenal next weekend will be crucial for Liverpool’s bid to regain the lead.

Manchester United, currently in seventh place with 28 points, remains one point behind Newcastle United in sixth and one ahead of West Ham United, their next opponents.

Despite Liverpool’s dominance in possession, particularly in the second half, they struggled to create clear-cut chances. United’s defensive quartet—Diogo Dalot, Jonny Evans, Raphael Varane, and Luke Shaw—put up a formidable barrier, making crucial blocks and headers to thwart Liverpool’s attacks. Goalkeeper Andre Onana, making a league-high eight saves, played a pivotal role in denying Liverpool any breakthroughs.

In the second half, United showed more attacking intent, with Rasmus Hojlund having the best chance of the match, testing Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson. Towards the end, Dalot received two yellow cards, seemingly for dissent, adding a dramatic twist to the closing moments of the match.
