Srinagar Shivers: Record Low of Minus 4.8 Sets Winter’s Grip
On December 11, Srinagar embraced winter’s icy embrace, marking a seasonal milestone with a bone-chilling low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius. As the city shivered, water pipes succumbed to the freeze, and even the bravest morning walkers opted to stay indoors.
According to the vigilant eyes of Meteorological officials, this frigid temperature makes it the lowest recorded minimum this season in Srinagar. Surrounding regions shared in the cold spell, with Gulmarg at minus 3.6 and Pahalgam at minus 4.7.
Venturing into the Ladakh region, Leh and Drass town experienced a frosty night, with temperatures dropping to minus 12.1 and minus 11.7, respectively.
Contrastingly, the plains of Jammu saw relatively milder conditions, with temperatures at 9.7, while Katra recorded 6.7. Batote, Bhaderwah, and Banihal witnessed the onset of winter, registering minimums of 4.1, 0.8, and 1.4 degrees Celsius, respectively.
This icy descent into winter hints at the forthcoming 40-day period known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ a local term capturing the essence of the harsh winter cold. This annual frosty ritual begins its reign on December 21 and weaves its chill until January 30.
