TOKYO: Five people died when a coast guard aircraft collided with a Japan Airlines plane, according to the Japanese transport minister, Tetsuo Saito.

The captain of the coast guard plane managed to escape. The Japan Airlines plane caught fire on the runway, and footage from NHK showed flames coming from the windows.

All 367 passengers on the Japan Airlines flight, which originated from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido, were successfully evacuated. Fire crews are actively working to control the fire, but details about injuries or the incident are still unclear.

Japan has a strong safety record in commercial aviation, with no major accidents in recent decades, except for a tragic incident in 1985 when a JAL jumbo jet crashed in the central Gunma region, resulting in the loss of 520 passengers and crew.
