Dharwad, Karnataka: In a significant development for commuters between Dharwad and Bengaluru, the Siddaganga Intercity Express (train numbers 12725/26) has been converted from a diesel engine train to an electric train. This marks the complete electrification of the Dharwad-Bengaluru railway line.

The first electric journey of the Siddaganga Intercity Express took place on Friday, December 1, 2023, traveling from Bengaluru to Dharwad. The train will return to Bengaluru on December 2nd and continue its operations as an electric train.

This development has been welcomed by passengers and officials alike. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and all railway officials for making the Dharwad-Bengaluru line 100% electric.

The electrification of the railway line is expected to bring a number of benefits, including:

  • Reduced travel time: Electric trains are generally faster than diesel trains, which could lead to shorter travel times between Dharwad and Bengaluru.
  • Lower emissions: Electric trains are more environmentally friendly than diesel trains, as they produce zero emissions. This will help to improve air quality in both Dharwad and Bengaluru.
  • Lower operating costs: Electric trains are generally cheaper to operate than diesel trains, which could lead to lower ticket prices for passengers.

The conversion of the Siddaganga Intercity Express to an electric train is a significant milestone in the development of the Indian railway system. It is hoped that this will encourage further electrification of railway lines across the country.
