Mumbai: In a dramatic development, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket shortly after reports emerged that he had been removed as India’s Test captain. The 38-year-old ends his red-ball career with 4,301 runs in 67 Tests, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties, averaging 40.57.
Rohit led India to the World Test Championship final against Australia, but a dip in form and poor results—including five losses in the last six Tests under his leadership—prompted the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to opt for a change ahead of the upcoming England tour.
Though Rohit is expected to remain ODI captain, his place in the Test squad may now be limited to that of a specialist batter. The decision reportedly followed multiple meetings, including one in Mumbai, where selectors outlined a new direction for the Test team, which the BCCI has chosen to support.
