Bengaluru, May 19, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 23 districts in Karnataka, including Bengaluru, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall, thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 50–60 km/h from Monday, May 19 through Thursday, May 22.
According to the IMD’s sub-division-wise weather warnings issued today, multiple regions in Karnataka are expected to experience varying intensities of rainfall over the next week:
Coastal Karnataka:
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been forecast from May 19 to May 22, with specific alerts for thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls.
Very heavy rain is expected on May 21 and 22, shifting to heavy rain between May 23 and May 25.
The region is on orange alert for the first four days, signaling significant weather activity.
North Interior Karnataka:
The region is expected to receive very heavy rain from May 19 to May 22.
From May 23 to May 25, the forecast is for moderate to heavy rain, warranting a yellow alert.
South Interior Karnataka:
Bengaluru and surrounding districts are under yellow and orange alerts due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from May 19 to May 22.
Very heavy rain and squalls are predicted on May 19 and 20, while May 21 and 22 will likely bring continued thunderstorms and lightning.
From May 23 onwards, conditions are expected to ease, with no warnings in place.
Monsoon Advancements Expected:
Meteorologists attribute the adverse weather to an upper-air cyclonic circulation hovering over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and extending over Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. A trough running from Telangana to North Tamil Nadu is further pulling in moisture, leading to enhanced rainfall across southern India.
Additionally, the IMD noted that atmospheric conditions are becoming favorable for the southwest monsoon to advance over parts of the South Arabian Sea, signaling the potential for more widespread rainfall in Karnataka in the coming days.
