At 0323 GMT on Sunday, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale shook the area located 52 km southwest of Canete, Chile, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter, initially pinpointed at 38.08 degrees south latitude and 73.88 degrees west longitude, had a depth of 11.8 km, as reported by the Xinhua News Agency.
