3-Day Homeless Count Begins in Los Angeles with 6,000 Volunteers
Los Angeles County is mobilizing 6,000 volunteers for a three-day effort to count the homeless population. Led by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, the “point-in-time” count aims to estimate the unhoused and assess their needs, addressing the city’s escalating homelessness crisis., reported US Media.
Frustration has grown among California residents due to lawmakers’ inability to curb the surge. Homelessness has surged by 70% in LA County and 80% in the city since 2015. In 2023, over 75,500 people were reported homeless in LA County, marking a 9% increase from the previous year.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a homelessness state of emergency in 2022 and initiated efforts to move over 21,000 unhoused individuals into temporary shelters in 2023.
