The opposition bloc, INDIA, is set to convene a crucial meeting in Delhi on Tuesday to strategize on a collaborative campaign, seat allocation, and a revised approach to challenge the BJP in the upcoming 2024 general elections following setbacks in recent state polls. Crafting a “core positive agenda” will be a central focus for INDIA members. The theme “Main Nahin, Hum (We, Not Me)” is expected to guide their discussions.

Mamata Banerjee, TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister, asserted that the alliance’s prime ministerial candidate would be decided post the 2024 elections, expressing confidence in overcoming differences to defeat the BJP. Banerjee dismissed concerns about the alliance’s timing, emphasizing the need for unity against the BJP.

Tejashwi Yadav, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader, highlighted the ongoing preparations for the polls within the INDIA bloc, emphasizing the strength of regional parties. Leaders such as Nitish Kumar and Uddhav Thackeray arrived in Delhi for the meeting, focusing on the challenge of formulating a common program and addressing differences among alliance members.

The recent BJP victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh intensify pressure on opposition unity. Seat-sharing negotiations are underway, especially in states like Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, while issues in West Bengal, Kerala, Punjab, and Delhi persist. Opposition parties may reconsider their strategy, considering recent electoral outcomes and the failure of certain issues like the caste survey to resonate with voters.

Despite setbacks, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge affirms a positive agenda, highlighting people’s concerns. With limited time before the 2024 elections, the INDIA bloc faces the challenge of reshaping its narrative against the BJP under Prime Minister Modi. This marks the fourth meeting of the INDIA bloc, emphasizing the urgency of forging a cohesive strategy.
