Mumbai: In an unexpected turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made a surprising announcement on Saturday, nominating renowned public prosecutor Ujwal Nikam (71) as its candidate for the Mumbai North Central parliamentary constituency.

Nikam, known for his successful prosecution of Ajmal Kasab and others in the 26/11 terror attack case, replaced Poonam Mahajan, who had won the 2014 and 2019 elections. Poonam is the daughter of the late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, who tragically lost his life under mysterious circumstances at the hands of his own brother, Pravin, in 2006—an incident in which Nikam served as the public prosecutor.

Despite Poonam’s exceptional oratory skills and organizational acumen, she was perceived as an underperformer during her tenure as a parliamentarian. Particularly in her second term, she was criticized for failing to maintain regular communication with her constituents and party members.
