Bengaluru, June 4: What was meant to be a historic celebration turned tragic as a stampede-like situation outside Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations left 11 people dead and 33 injured. The shocking incident occurred on June 4 evening, when thousands of fans overwhelmed the venue, far exceeding its capacity.

Addressing a press conference today, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He confirmed that the state government will bear the full cost of medical treatment for the injured, many of whom are now out of danger, according to hospital sources.

The CM revealed that 2-3 lakh fans had gathered near the stadium, although the seating capacity is just 35,000. “Neither the government nor the Cricket Association anticipated such an overwhelming crowd,” Siddaramaiah said. He admitted that while massive gatherings were also seen at the Vidhana Soudha, no untoward incidents occurred there.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered, and officials have been directed to submit a report within 15 days. The CM assured that strict action will be taken against those found responsible.

“I visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals and met the injured. Such a tragedy should never happen during a celebration. The government is deeply pained by this loss,” Siddaramaiah said.

Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, and Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh were present during the press conference.
