New Delhi, May 24, 2025 — The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced an 18-member squad for the much-anticipated five-match Test series against England, set to begin on June 20 in Leeds. In a major development, Shubman Gill has been named captain of the Indian Test team, with wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant appointed as his deputy.
This marks a new chapter for Indian Test cricket, as the leadership baton is officially passed to Gill, who has shown remarkable maturity and consistency across formats. Pant’s return to international cricket after a long injury layoff also strengthens the side, with his dual role as vice-captain and wicketkeeper being a significant boost.
India’s Squad Blends Youth and Experience
The squad features a mix of seasoned players and fresh faces. Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja form the core of the batting and all-rounder departments, while the inclusion of youngsters like Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Reddy, and Abhimanyu Easwaran suggests the selectors are eyeing a long-term transition.
India’s pace attack will be led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj, supported by Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, and Akash Deep. Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar will provide spin options, with Jadeja lending balance as an all-rounder.
The squad also includes two designated wicketkeepers—Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel.
