Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has bravely shared his struggle with depression, revealing that he found it difficult to look at his own reflection due to feelings of shame. The 2007 T20 World Cup champion spoke candidly about his experiences with clinical depression, aiming to raise awareness about mental health issues in the sports community.

In a YouTube video, Uthappa emphasized the importance of discussing topics like depression and suicide, especially in light of recent tragedies involving sports figures, including the heartbreaking news of former English cricketer Graham Thorpe’s passing. Thorpe, affectionately known as “Thorpy” by fans, tragically took his own life earlier this month, prompting Uthappa to reflect on his own challenges.

“Mental health is a crucial topic that often goes unaddressed in sports. As athletes face increasing pressure, it’s essential to break the stigma surrounding these issues,” Uthappa stated. “I’ve encountered many battles on the cricket field, but none have been as difficult as my fight with depression. I’m speaking out because I know I’m not alone. It’s important to prioritize your well-being, seek support, and find light in the darkness.”

Uthappa recounted his feelings of being a burden to those he loves during his struggles, stating, “It’s heavy. I often felt like I was seeking answers while battling my clinical depression.”

Over a nine-year international career, Uthappa played 46 ODIs and 13 T20Is, amassing 1,183 runs, including six half-centuries. He announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in September 2022.
