Bhubaneshwar, December 9: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s recent assurance of recovering looted wealth, the Income Tax Department (I-T) has significantly escalated its crackdown on a prominent Odisha liquor distillery group. Adding to the approximately ₹225 crore seized till Friday, I-T sleuths on Saturday unearthed an additional 20 bags of cash, exceeding ₹50 crore, from the residence of a countrymade liquor manufacturer in Bolangir district.

The counting of the seized money is currently ongoing at designated State Bank of India branches in Sambalpur and Bolangir. Due to the massive amount of cash and technical glitches, note-counting machines from various banks have been mobilized to expedite the process.

Income Tax Director General Sanjay Bahadur, currently in Bhubaneswar, refrained from divulging specific details, stating, “Our team is diligently working on the matter.” This extensive operation involves a dedicated force of 150 I-T officials, bolstered by 20 additional personnel from Hyderabad for meticulous digital document verification.

The initial raids targeted Baldeo Sahu and Group of Companies, a major liquor manufacturer in western Odisha, suspected of financial irregularities with possible connections to a member of Parliament from Jharkhand. This intensified action aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s recent emphasis on retrieving every penny of illegally amassed wealth, reaffirming his commitment to financial transparency and accountability.
