The central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced Rs 2 per liter reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel, bringing relief to consumers ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Effective from 15th March at 6 am, the price of both petrol and diesel will be slashed by two rupees, as confirmed by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

The Ministry emphasized that this reduction is expected to stimulate consumer spending while also alleviating operating costs for a substantial number of vehicles across the country. It is estimated that over 58 lakh heavy goods vehicles reliant on diesel, along with 6 crore cars and 27 crore two-wheelers, will benefit from the reduced fuel prices.

The timing of this price reduction is noteworthy, coming just ahead of the highly anticipated Lok Sabha elections. Union Minister for Petroleum Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this decision, highlighting that fuel rates in India are comparatively lower than those in several other countries.

Minister Puri further underscored this point by comparing fuel prices in India to rates in countries such as Italy, France, Germany, and Spain. According to his statement, fuel prices in these countries are 50 to 79 per cent higher than those in India.
