In Hyderabad, Y. S. Sharmila, the President of YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP), convened a significant meeting with party leaders to deliberate on the potential merger with the Congress party on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Sharmila will seek the opinions of party leaders regarding the Congress party’s offer. Following this discussion, she is scheduled to travel to Idupulapaya in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, to pay respects at the grave of her late father and former Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

In the coming days, Sharmila is expected to visit Delhi to engage in discussions with the leadership of the Congress party. The Congress, aiming to rejuvenate its prospects in Andhra Pradesh, has been making efforts to entice Sharmila into its fold. Reportedly, she has been offered the position of state Congress chief and a Rajya Sabha membership.

Sources said that she will join the grand old party on January 4, but it is yet to be officially announced.

Sharmila, who is the sister of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) President Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, has been in talks regarding the merger of YSRTP with the Congress for several months. However, this merger did not materialize before the Telangana Assembly elections.

Notably, YSRTP refrained from contesting in the Telangana Assembly elections and provided unconditional support to the Congress party. Sharmila justified this decision by stating that it was taken to prevent the splitting of votes against the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). Despite her desire to contest and become an MLA, the decision was made in the best interest of the party’s strategic goals. Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh are slated for April-May this year, coinciding with the Lok Sabha polls.
