Breaking Point: Sakshi Malik Announces Retirement Over Wrestling Federation’s Controversial Election
Star wrestler Sakshi Malik, India’s first woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal, tearfully announced her retirement from wrestling during a live television broadcast.
Her decision followed the election of Sanjay Singh, a close aide of controversial former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, to the top post in WFI.
Malik, surrounded by fellow protesting wrestlers, expressed her dismay over Singh’s election and the absence of women in leadership roles within WFI. The election arose from sexual harassment allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh, a BJP parliamentarian, and Malik emphasized the need for a female president to address harassment issues within the federation.
