Alert: First COVID-19 Death Reported in Karnataka Amid Surge in JN.1 Variant Cases

Bengaluru: Karnataka recorded its first death due to COVID-19 on December 20, 2023, amidst a rising number of cases linked to the JN.1 variant in southern states, reported local media.

The victim, a 65-year-old, resident of Chamrajpet in Bengaluru, reportedly had underlying health conditions, emphasizing the impact of comorbidities on COVID-19 fatalities. With the recent surge, Kerala also recorded three deaths on December 19, contributing to the overall concern in the southern region. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare reported 2,041 active cases in Karnataka, prompting increased vigilance and preventive measures.

Surge in COVID-19 Cases in India Ahead of Christmas Raises Concerns

Amid the Christmas and New Year celebrations, India is grappling with a surge in COVID-19 cases, reporting 614 new infections in the last 24 hours. This marks the highest number of cases in a single day since May 21, coinciding with a global spike in infections attributed to the JN.1 subvariant. According to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday, active cases have risen to 2,311, with three deaths reported in the last 24 hours in Kerala.

The active COVID-19 cases in India have doubled in the last nine days, increasing from 938 on December 11 to 1,970 on Tuesday. NITI Aayog member Dr V K Paul mentioned that 21 cases of the JN.1 subvariant have been detected across the country. States like Goa, Kerala, and Maharashtra have reported instances of this subvariant.

The Centre has released an advisory to all states following the detection of the JN.1 variant, emphasizing the need for constant monitoring. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya assured states of support and urged preparedness with mock drills, increased surveillance, and effective communication. The JN.1 variant, classified as a “variant of interest” by the WHO, is causing global concern due to its increased transmissibility.
