Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has found himself in headlines once again—this time not for his achievements on the field, but due to legal issues surrounding his pub, One8 Commune, located in Bengaluru.

The Cubbon Park Police have filed a suo moto case against the establishment, citing violations under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA). According to reports, the pub lacks a designated smoking area, which is a mandatory requirement under the law.

 What Law Was Violated?

One8 Commune is facing action under Sections 4 and 21 of COTPA, which prohibit smoking in public places and mandate the presence of dedicated smoking zones in bars and restaurants. The action comes shortly after Karnataka’s recent crackdown on tobacco-related violations, including a ban on hookah bars and an increase in the minimum legal age for purchasing tobacco products from 18 to 21. These changes are part of the COTPA Amendment Act, 2024, which was recently signed into law by the President of India.

Not the First Legal Issue

This isn’t the pub’s first brush with controversy. In June 2024, the police registered a case against the establishment for staying open beyond permitted business hours. Later in December 2024, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) issued a notice to the pub for lacking proper fire safety clearance from the local Fire Department.

About One8 Commune

Named after Virat Kohli’s iconic jersey number 18, One8 Commune was launched as a casual, community-driven space where guests could eat, unwind, and socialize. The term “Commune” reflects its intended vibe—a welcoming, inclusive place for people to come together.
