Surgery has always  been a demanding  profession requiring clinical brilliance, precision, patience, perseverance and skill.

From good old times all these qualities were only acknowledged in male surgeons, while women were silenced in the operation theatre.

Even today, the journey is not without its challenges—gender bias, work-life balance concerns, the pressure to constantly “prove” oneself. But what defines women in surgery is not the absence of obstacles, but their ability to rise above  all them. That’s why they say “Grow through what you go through”

But now the tide and times have changed and continues to change—because of women who  started dreaming of changing the narrative . Women surgeons now occupy different roles right from being pioneers to role models.

Women are often doubtful about their capabilities and their strength leading to fewer opportunities or mentorship. Ask any woman surgeon about her turning point, and often it’s a mentor—a senior who believed in her before she believed in herself.                                    I’m always grateful to my male surgeons – my  teachers and mentors who shaped me to whom I’m today.

As a mother and a surgeon work- life balance is challenging, but it’s also empowering. All thanks to my supportive family who are always my power house and strength. Surgery has taught me strength, discipline, and above all, compassion.”

“When you see some dynamic lady surgeon performing some complex surgery,  leading the team, it tells you it’s possible to break the barriers “.

Recent studies have shown that surgical teams with greater gender diversity tend to perform better. Patients have shorter hospital stays, fewer complications and improved outcome. Women bring unique perspectives and approaches that enhance decision-making and leadership. Their presence also inspires the next generation of female medical students to pursue surgery without fear or hesitation.

Today, women are leading from the front being it transplant teams, performing complex robotic surgeries, heading academic departments and also part of surgical research. Yet many still face the added pressure of proving themselves daily.

Doctor you are only going to operate na ?  is a phrase many women surgeons get to still hear. But increasingly, the answer is: “Yes I will… with a smile

In days to come let us imagine a world where no lady medico is told surgery is “too hard,” “too demanding,” or “not a branch for females.”

Surgeons’ Week is not just about honoring skill—it’s about celebrating spirit. And the spirit of women in surgery is unshakable. With each suture, each incision , they give a good scar, get life under the knife to the patient.

Let’s continue to recognize, support, and uplift the women who wear their surgical scrubs like armor and lead like pioneers.

The future of surgery is brighter and more balanced — because it belongs to all who are skilled, passionate, and driven, regardless of gender.

From Operation theatre lights to limelight- lets celebrate the unsung heroes in scrubs!
