New Delhi, May 12: In a major moment for Indian cricket, Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtains down on a remarkable red-ball career that spanned over 14 years. The 35-year-old batting maestro made the announcement via social media on Monday, expressing gratitude for what he called a deeply personal and transformative journey.

Kohli retires with an impressive record: 9,230 runs from 123 Tests at an average of over 48, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. His contribution was pivotal in India’s rise to the top of the Test rankings and several memorable series victories both at home and abroad

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on,” Kohli wrote in an emotional statement. “It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life.”

He described the charm of Test cricket as something “deeply personal” — referencing the grind, the long hours, and the unglamorous but meaningful moments that define the format.

Kohli added, “As I step away from this format, it’s not easy — but it feels right. I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for. I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way.”

The announcement comes just a week after India’s Test captain Rohit Sharma also called time on his Test career, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket.

Kohli concluded his message with a nod to his Test cap number — “#269, signing off” — and a heartfelt sign-off: 🇮🇳❤️.

Known for his intensity, passion, and unyielding commitment, Kohli leaves behind a legacy that has inspired a generation. While he continues to play white-ball cricket, his absence in the longest format will certainly be felt by fans and teammates alike.
