Birmingham, July 3, 2025: In a landmark moment for Indian cricket, skipper Shubman Gill smashed a historic double century (200+) on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. The young captain’s innings has not only kept India firmly in the contest but also etched his name into the record books.
Gill, who turned 25 earlier this year, became the youngest Indian captain to score a Test double century on English soil. This record was previously held by Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, who achieved the feat at age 23 during the 1964 Delhi Test against England.
Continuing his stellar form, Gill registered his second consecutive Test century, demonstrating maturity, technique, and leadership under challenging English conditions.
His 200+ knock also makes him only the second Indian captain after Virat Kohli to score a Test double century in overseas conditions. Kohli had scored 200 against the West Indies in North Sound back in 2016.
Key Milestones from Gill’s Knock:
- Youngest Indian captain to score 200+ in Tests in England (25 years)
- First Indian skipper since Virat Kohli (2016) to score 200+ overseas
- Second consecutive Test century in the current series
- Led India from the front in a pressure situation
After India opted to bat first, early wickets had put the visitors in a tricky spot. But Gill stabilized the innings with a composed yet aggressive knock, reaching the double century mark with a crisp boundary off James Anderson. His innings was laced with elegant cover drives, calculated risks, and a masterful approach against spin and swing alike.
A Glimpse into Shubman Gill’s Rise:
From his U-19 World Cup heroics in 2018 to becoming the face of India’s next-gen batting line-up, Gill’s ascent has been rapid and impactful. His promotion to captaincy in the absence of Rohit Sharma has proven fruitful, with both bat and brain playing in perfect sync.
