Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the killing of George Floyd, experienced a stabbing incident in federal prison on Friday, according to ABC News sources.

Currently held at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Chauvin is reportedly in stable condition and expected to survive the assault that occurred around 12:30 p.m. local time. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that life-saving measures were taken, and the situation was contained with no harm to prison staff. The inmate involved, believed to be Chauvin, was not officially identified.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara condemned violence, emphasizing that Chauvin’s actions on May 25, 2020, were criminal, contributing to George Floyd’s death, and called for ongoing healing in Minneapolis. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison expressed sadness over the violence against Chauvin, stressing that incarcerated individuals, including Chauvin, deserve to serve their sentences without fear of retaliation.

Chauvin’s April 2021 conviction on charges of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter resulted in a 22 ½ year prison sentence. In June 2022, he received an additional 21-year sentence on federal civil rights charges related to Floyd’s death. The Supreme Court denied Chauvin’s appeal of his second-degree murder charge on Monday. The incident, captured on video, had triggered global protests against police brutality and racism during the pandemic.
