UK Considers Outdoor Smoking Ban in Pubs, Restaurants, and Sports Venues
Proposed tighter smoking restrictions in the UK could lead to a ban on smoking in pub gardens, outdoor restaurants, near hospitals, and sports venues, as per leaked government documents. These measures are part of an enhanced tobacco and vapes bill aimed at prohibiting tobacco sales to anyone born after January 2009. The plans include extending the existing indoor smoking ban to various outdoor settings, though private homes and large public spaces will remain unaffected.
Dr. Layla McCay of the NHS Confederation welcomed the initiative, highlighting the need to tackle smoking, the leading cause of preventable illness in the UK. Meanwhile, the Department of Health emphasized their commitment to protecting non-smokers and children from second-hand smoke.
However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential economic impact on the hospitality sector. Kate Nicholls from UKHospitality warned that outdoor smoking bans could harm businesses, particularly those catering to both smokers and non-smokers. Critics, including Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, argue that such measures could threaten the existence of pubs.
Despite these concerns, Labour leader Keir Starmer is reportedly determined to advance the ban, backed by England’s chief medical officer, Professor Chris Whitty.
