Summer Rains Bring Relief and Tragedy: Lightning Strikes Kill Five Across Karnataka

Hubballi, May 13: After days of scorching summer heat, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, thunder, and lightning lashed Hubballi and several parts of Karnataka on Monday evening. While the downpour brought much-needed relief from rising temperatures, it also turned deadly in several districts, with lightning strikes claiming at least five lives.

In Hubballi, residents welcomed over an hour of rainfall, which cooled the atmosphere but was accompanied by dangerous lightning and gusty winds, causing temporary disruption.

According to reports, five lives were lost due to lightning strikes across different districts:

In Koppal district, a tragic incident occurred in Hulihaidar village of Yalaburga taluk, where 45-year-old farmer Yankappa Jadi and one of his oxen were killed by a lightning strike while working in the field.

In Ballari district, a lightning strike in Raravi village, Siraguppa taluk, killed two members of the same family. The deceased were identified as Bhirappa (45) and Sunil (26). Another family member, Vinod (14), sustained serious injuries. The incident occurred when the victims were grazing sheep and sought shelter under a tree during the rain.

In Tangadagi village of Muddebihal taluk, Mallappa Gurushantappa Talikote, who was out grazing cattle, died after being struck by lightning.
