Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of Karnataka assured the public of sufficient water storage in the Kaveri and Kabini rivers, ensuring availability until the end of June. Addressing reporters on Monday, he highlighted the current water reserves, with 11.02 TMC in KRS and 9.02 TMC in Kabini.

Acknowledging challenges, Siddaramaiah noted that out of 14,000 government bore wells, 6,900 were dry, contributing to water scarcity in certain areas, particularly in the 110 villages recently incorporated into BBMP. To mitigate these issues, plans are underway to provide an additional 775 MLD of water following the completion of Cauvery Phase 5 work by June’s end.

The CM outlined various measures to tackle water scarcity, including drilling new bore wells, reviving inactive ones, and utilizing private tankers for water supply in affected regions. He emphasized the importance of swift response to complaints, instructing the increase of control rooms and task forces.

Furthermore, instructions were issued to prevent the misuse of drinking water, emphasizing the use of treated water for non-drinking purposes and initiating efforts to recharge dried-up lakes, which would aid in groundwater replenishment.

Regarding funds, Siddaramaiah assured that both the government and BBMP are allocating sufficient resources for water management, with daily official meetings to strategize and weekly action plans in place. Additionally, an expert committee is being formed to address future water scarcity concerns.

Responding to criticism from Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the state’s financial situation, Siddaramaiah defended the government’s actions, highlighting the lack of central assistance despite requests for drought relief. He questioned the morality of such accusations, emphasizing the state’s efforts to support farmers despite receiving no aid from the central government.

The CM also criticized the BJP’s electoral strategy, asserting the Congress’s strength in delivering on promises and ensuring public welfare. He refuted claims that BJP’s campaigns centered around Modi’s leadership guarantee success, citing previous electoral victories in constituencies campaigned by Modi during assembly elections.

Siddaramaiah reiterated the importance of water conservation and urged the public to report water-related issues through designated helpline numbers.
