Multiple Eye Injuries Reported in Bengaluru Due to Firecracker Accidents
Bengaluru: Despite extensive awareness campaigns urging safety precautions during Diwali celebrations, firecracker-related accidents have resulted in multiple serious injuries in the city. As of now, three individuals are hospitalized at Shankar Hospital, three at Narayana Nethralaya, and one at Minto Hospital due to severe eye injuries incurred from fireworks.
Among the injured is an eight-year-old boy who suffered significant damage to his eye when a sparkler struck him while he was lighting fireworks. He has been admitted to Shankar Eye Hospital, where medical staff are monitoring his condition amid concerns that he may lose his vision. Ongoing treatment is being administered, and doctors are awaiting further laboratory results to assess his prognosis.
In another incident, a three-year-old girl sustained a corneal injury when a sparkler hit her eye while she was watching the festivities. Additionally, a ten-year-old boy was injured after approaching a firecracker that exploded unexpectedly. He is currently receiving medical attention for his injury.
At Narayana Nethralaya’s Rajajinagar branch, two children and another boy from the Bannerghatta branch are receiving outpatient treatment for injuries related to firecrackers.
Moreover, Minto Hospital has reported two incidents prior to the festival and received another case around 5:30 PM on Thursday, involving a 17-year-old boy who sustained an eye injury while bursting crackers.
Overall, three cases have been documented at Minto Hospital. Two individuals—a 5-year-old child and an 18-year-old boy—were also injured while observing others light fireworks. The older boy has sustained a severe injury to his left cornea and has undergone surgery. Medical professionals have indicated that the extent of his vision loss will be assessed in two weeks, following the treatment process.
As the city continues to celebrate the festival, authorities are reiterating the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to prevent further accidents and injuries during this festive season.
