Hubballi: Arrest Made in Ayodhya Janmabhoomi 1992 Violence Case

Hubballi: The twin cities police in Hubballi have apprehended a suspect linked to the violence that occurred on December 5, 1992. On that day, a shop was set ablaze during a protest related to the Ram Janmabhoomi issue, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) by the Town Police. The FIR listed nine accused, and recently, one of them, identified as Srikant Poojari, a resident of Old Hubballi, was arrested in connection with the case.

The timing of the arrest, after so many years, has sparked controversy, with right-wing activists questioning its coincidence with the upcoming Pran Pratistapana ceremony for the installation of Lord Sri Ram’s idol scheduled for January 22.

Addressing reporters, Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar explained that the arrest was part of addressing a long-pending case. She emphasized that the police routinely work to resolve such cases and clarified that it was not influenced by any external factors.

Sukumar revealed that among the nine accused, three had already passed away, and their death certificates were submitted to the court. The police are actively pursuing the remaining individuals implicated in the case. She asserted, “We have successfully resolved cases pending for 45 years; this is part of the regular work of the police. We have recently closed numerous long-pending cases by apprehending the accused.”
