In a shocking turn of events, a man in Surat, Gujarat, deliberately severed four fingers of his left hand in an attempt to render himself unfit for his job as a computer operator at a relative’s diamond firm, police revealed on Saturday.

The man, identified as 32-year-old Mayur Tarapara, initially spun a fabricated tale, claiming that he had lost consciousness by the roadside and woke up to find his fingers missing. However, an investigation by the Surat Crime Branch uncovered that the injury was self-inflicted.

According to a police statement, Tarapara confessed that he lacked the courage to inform his relatives that he no longer wished to work at their firm, Anabh Gems, located in Varachha Mini Bazaar. The man believed losing his fingers would automatically disqualify him from his role in the accounts department.

Initially, Tarapara told police that the incident occurred on December 8 while he was traveling to a friend’s house on his motorcycle. He claimed he felt lightheaded and lost consciousness near Vedanta Circle on the Amroli Ring Road. When he came to, he alleged that four fingers were inexplicably severed, sparking initial speculation about the involvement of black magic.

The case was initially registered at Amroli Police Station but later transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation. Through CCTV footage, technical analysis, and intelligence gathering, authorities unraveled the truth.

The probe revealed that Tarapara purchased a sharp knife from a shop near Char Rasta in Singanpore. On the night of December 10, he parked his motorcycle at the Amroli Ring Road and, at around 10 PM, severed four fingers. He tied a rope around his arm to stem the blood flow and disposed of the severed fingers and knife in separate bags.

Tarapara’s friends later rushed him to the hospital. Police recovered three fingers and the knife during their search. Amroli police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
