Is Nayar a Batting Coach or Assistant Coach? I Don’t Know”: Gavaskar on Team India’s Coaching Roles
The future of Team India under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership is drawing attention after the team’s disappointing 0-3 Test series loss to New Zealand at home. The outcome has raised questions regarding the head coach and his support staff. As preparations intensify for the upcoming Australia tour, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar voiced his thoughts on India’s current coaching structure, finding the roles and responsibilities within Gambhir’s team unclear.
During an interview, Gavaskar expressed his confusion over the designations of Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate in the support staff. Upon learning that both serve as assistant and batting coaches, Gavaskar found the arrangement humorous, especially since Gambhir, with a notable career record, could personally guide the players on tackling Australian conditions. He suggested that Gambhir’s experience could benefit Indian batters, particularly regarding approach and strategy.
Gavaskar further asserted that Gambhir’s “honeymoon period” as head coach has ended, emphasizing the need for tangible results. He advised Gambhir to actively guide the team during the Australia series, highlighting that any lapses would no longer be overlooked. The cricket icon warned that Gambhir’s role could be in jeopardy if the team fails to show improvement in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Several former cricketers and analysts have also questioned Gambhir’s decisions, suggesting that his future as head coach may hinge on the team’s performance in Australia.
