The mysterious death of a 12-year-old boy has cast a shadow over a government school in north Delhi, where he allegedly faced assault by senior students nine days prior to his demise.

The family of the Class 6 student from the Shastri Nagar government school has raised concerns about potential medical negligence by a private doctor who initially treated the boy. The incident unfolded on January 11 when the student was reportedly assaulted by students from Classes 9 and 10 as he exited a school washroom.

Upon returning home with visible injuries, the boy informed his parents, leading them to seek medical attention at a government hospital in northwest Delhi. Unfortunately, the orthopaedic department crucial for addressing the severity of the injuries was reportedly closed at the time. Faced with this obstacle, the family turned to a private doctor in Rohini Sector-7 for assistance, who prescribed medications. However, over the following days, the boy’s condition worsened, and he stopped eating.

Concerned about his deteriorating health, the family returned to the government hospital on January 20, where the young boy tragically succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

In a distressing revelation, the father, Sharma, visited the school to inquire about the assault. According to him, two students corroborated his son’s account, confirming the attack by senior students. However, they were unable to identify the assailants.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (north), Manoj Kumar Meena, stated that a post-mortem by a board of doctors is underway to determine the cause of death, and legal action will be based on the autopsy report.

On another front, the Delhi government initiated an inquiry into the incident, expressing condolences to the grieving family. The alleged incident occurred outside the school premises, prompting parents to request CCTV footage for verification. An official noted that a prompt inquiry had been ordered, seeking reports from a committee within two days and a formal report from the Head of the School on the same day.
