Former Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Joins BJP After Resignation
Kolkata: In a significant turn of events, former Calcutta High Court Judge, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday following his resignation on Tuesday.
Justice Gangopadhyay, who had openly expressed his intention to enter politics immediately after stepping down, aims to contribute to societal betterment through his political endeavors. Sources indicate that he is likely to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket from the Tamluk constituency in West Bengal.
Gangopadhyay revealed, according that he had taken a week-long leave, and at the conclusion of this period, the BJP approached him through mutual acquaintances. Simultaneously, he also initiated contact with the BJP through common friends, leading to the decision to resign from his judicial post. Notably, scheduled to retire in August 2024, Gangopadhyay has etched his name in history as the first High Court judge in recent memory to resign and transition into active politics.
He joined the party in presence of West Bengal BJP chief Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and other leaders in Kolkata.
