Emiliano Martinez Banned for Offensive Behavior, Misses Argentina’s World Cup Qualifiers
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been handed a two-match suspension by FIFA, sidelining him from Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia in October. The ban follows two separate incidents during Argentina’s 2026 World Cup qualifying matches earlier this month against Chile and Colombia.
The first incident occurred on 6 September, after Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Chile. Martinez, echoing his controversial celebration from the 2022 World Cup, held a replica Copa America trophy inappropriately against his crotch. This match marked Argentina’s return to the field since their Copa America win in the U.S. in July.
On 10 September, after Argentina’s 2-1 loss to Colombia, Martinez hit a camera with his gloves as a cameraman approached him on the pitch.
While the Argentina Football Association expressed its disagreement with FIFA’s decision, it acknowledged Martinez’s responsibility for his actions.
