Dharwad, June 9: The long-awaited notification for the formation of a separate Dharwad Municipal Corporation, announced in the state budget and sent to Raj Bhavan for final approval, remains pending as the Governor has yet to sign it — over a month and a half later. The delay has sparked frustration among local leaders and activists demanding swift action.
Venkatesh Machakanur, President of the Dharwad Separate Municipal Corporation Forum, addressed the media on Monday, urging the Governor to grant immediate approval. “Following the announcement, BJP leaders claimed credit for the development, but now they themselves are obstructing the final notification,” he said. Machakanur alleged expressed suspicion that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has raised objections with the Governor, delaying the process.
Criticizing misinformation being spread by municipal member and former Mayor Iresh Anchatageri regarding Dharwad’s jurisdiction and revenue, Machakanur said the reluctance to approve the notification stems from a lack of genuine concern for Dharwad’s growth. “The Governor must consider the development needs of both cities and the aspirations of their residents, and approve the separate corporation without further delay,” he emphasized.
Ravikumar Maliger added that local MPs and MLAs should put pressure on the Governor for a prompt approval. “If they fail, they risk facing public backlash, including black flag protests during their visits,” he warned. Maliger also mentioned that discussions are underway with writers, traders, and various organizations to consider a Dharwad bandh if the situation remains unresolved.
Addressing the scope of the new corporation, Danappa Kabber noted that currently, only urban areas are included in the municipal limits, with rural villages excluded. “We will soon initiate discussions on the inclusion of surrounding villages. Our delegation has already submitted the necessary documents to the Governor, requesting approval,” he said.
Vitthal Kammar, Shankar Neeravari, Veeranna Shettar, and other prominent local leaders were present during press conference.
