Cricketer Mohammed Shami to Contest Lok Sabha Elections on BJP Ticket? Why Rumours Doing Rounds?
New Delhi: Speculation is rife that renowned Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami might enter the political arena by contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket from the Bashirhat constituency in West Bengal.
This news has sparked discussions among political analysts and garnered attention on national media platforms over the past two days.
Sources reveal that BJP has reportedly approached Shami, who is currently side-lined from cricket duties due to a heel injury, to be a contender in the Lok Sabha polls. However, as of now, Shami has not made any official statement regarding his potential foray into politics.
Internally within the BJP, discussions indicate that fielding Shami as a candidate could significantly enhance the party’s electoral prospects in West Bengal, particularly in constituencies where minority communities hold considerable influence. While Shami’s response to the BJP’s proposal remains unknown, it is suggested that if he agrees, he could run from the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency.
The Basirhat constituency has recently been in the spotlight, notably due to incidents of violence in the Sandeshkhali village. The area has been a focal point of news coverage, making it a politically sensitive region.
The rumored association between Shami and the BJP gained traction after the cricketer, hailed as a star of the 2023 Cricket World Cup, was seen in the company of Home Minister Amit Shah at a public event. The two were observed engaging in informal discussions, prompting speculation about Shami’s potential entry into politics.
As of now, neither the BJP nor Shami has issued an official statement regarding these speculations.
