Grant Shapps, the Defence Secretary, has announced that British forces are prepared to take direct action against Houthi rebels who pose a threat to cargo ships in the Red Sea.

In a newspaper article, Shapps emphasized the UK’s commitment to protecting the vital shipping lane and cited a recent incident where a British warship shot down a suspected attack drone in the Red Sea.

The Houthi rebels, aligned with Iran and supporting Hamas, have targeted foreign ships, leading to warnings from the US and UK about potential military retaliation. Shapps underscored the importance of holding malign actors accountable for unlawful seizures and attacks, stating that continued Red Sea aggression could escalate into a broader conflict.

The international community, including the UK, has joined a naval operation to safeguard ships in the region. The Red Sea is a crucial global shipping route, with potential Houthi attacks impacting global trade and energy prices.
