Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee publicly congratulated Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday regarding his son’s upcoming promotion as chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mamata expressed her sentiments in a tone that left room for interpretation. “Congratulations, Union Home Minister!! Your son has not become a politician, but has become the ICC Chairman – a post much much more important than most politicians’!! Your son has indeed become very very powerful and I congratulate you on his this most elevated achievement indeed! Kudos!!”

The response from Bengal BJP spokesperson Archana Majumdar was swift and critical. “Perhaps you should begin by congratulating your brothers, Ajit Banerjee, President of the Bengal Olympic Association, and Babun Banerjee, Joint Secretary, for their impressive performance in the Paris Olympics,” she replied to Mamata’s post.

Jay Shah, who is currently the chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to take over as ICC chairman starting December 1, 2024. Prominent cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Gautam Gambhir quickly extended their congratulations to Jay Shah upon hearing the news, and he promptly expressed his gratitude in return.

The ICC announced his appointment in a press release on Tuesday, where Jay Shah stated, “I am humbled by the nomination. I look forward to collaborating closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 is a pivotal moment for cricket’s growth.”

Jay Shah’s tenure as BCCI chairman has not been without controversy. When he was appointed as chairman of the Asian Cricket Council in 2021, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi remarked, “Meritocracy, BJP style!”
