Biden Urges Ceasefires in Gaza and Between Israel and Hezbollah After Strike on Nasrallah
Washington: US President Joe Biden described the Israeli airstrike that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as “a measure of justice,” highlighting the end of his decades-long reign of terror. This development follows Hezbollah’s confirmation of Nasrallah’s death, which occurred amid ongoing tensions following Hamas’s assault on Israel on October 7, 2023. Biden noted that Nasrallah’s alliance with Hamas, which opened a “northern front” against Israel, underscored his culpability in the conflict.
The White House views Nasrallah’s death as a significant blow to Hezbollah, although it aims to manage the potential for broader regional conflict. The Pentagon emphasized that Israel did not provide prior notice of the operation.
Amid these escalating tensions, Biden has expressed a desire for ceasefires in Gaza and between Israel and Hezbollah to foster stability in the Middle East. In response to the violence, the U.S. State Department has ordered the departure of nonessential personnel and their families from Lebanon, citing a “volatile and unpredictable security situation.” The State Department has reiterated warnings to American citizens against traveling to Lebanon, advising them to leave while commercial options are still available.
