Australian Woman Granted Permission to Harvest Deceased Husband’s Sperm for Surrogacy
Melbourne: A 62-year-old Australian woman has been granted permission to collect her deceased husband’s sperm, NDTV reported. The couple, who tragically lost their son in a car accident in 2019 and their daughter in a drowning incident six years prior, had considered having another child.
After the husband passed away at home on December 17, the wife sought to preserve his sperm for potential use in surrogacy. However, delays at the hospital prompted her to go to the Supreme Court of Western Australia for an urgent order.
The judge allowed the harvesting and storage of the sperm but specified that further court orders would be necessary for fertilization. While uncommon, this situation has occurred before in Australia, with a similar case in June 2023 where a woman was permitted to retrieve sperm from her deceased husband.
