Zomato and Swiggy, two of India’s leading food delivery platforms, have now started levying a rain surcharge on premium users — a benefit that was previously waived for Zomato Gold and Swiggy One subscribers.
The additional charge, typically between ₹15 and ₹35, was earlier applied only to non-premium customers during bad weather. Now, even subscribers to the platforms’ paid membership plans are being billed the extra fee when ordering during rainy conditions.
According to a report by The Economic Times, both companies state that the surcharge helps compensate delivery partners working in challenging weather, ensuring safer and more sustainable service.
This move aligns with broader efforts by the companies to cut losses and move toward profitability. While the change may irk loyal subscribers, the platforms are positioning it as a necessary step to balance customer service with delivery partner welfare and business viability.
