Winter Parliamentary Session is set to run from November 25 to December 20, 2024, as announced by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. A special highlight of the session will be the celebration of the Constitution’s 75th Anniversary on November 26 in the Samvidhan Sadan’s Central Hall.

Two significant legislative items dominate the agenda: the Waqf Amendment Bill, currently under Joint Parliamentary Committee review, and the anticipated introduction of the ‘One Nation One Election’ proposal. The latter has sparked notable controversy, with Prime Minister Modi advocating for synchronized national and state elections to boost democratic efficiency and resource utilization.

However, the opposition, led by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, has taken a firm stance against the simultaneous election concept, declaring it “impossible” and emphasizing the need for comprehensive parliamentary consensus.

The JPC on Waqf Amendment Bills 2024 continues its nationwide stakeholder consultations, aiming to build consensus on this contentious legislation. Additionally, the session is expected to address the outcomes of the Jharkhand and Maharashtra Assembly elections, scheduled for announcement on November 23.

This session marks a crucial period for debating major electoral reforms and legislative changes in India’s parliamentary system.
