A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan, particularly the Noto region in Ishikawa prefecture, prompting tsunami warnings and urgent evacuation orders on Monday.
The quake triggered a rapid succession of tremors, including a 7.6 magnitude quake, leading to concerns about tsunami waves along the Japan coast.
A confirmed 1.2-meter tsunami hit Wajima city, while a potentially more significant five-meter tsunami was expected in Noto. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported multiple quakes in the region, with the largest occurring at 4:10 pm local time.
Despite Japan’s stringent construction regulations, memories of the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami loom large. In that disaster, a 9.0-magnitude quake caused significant casualties and triggered a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima plant.
The recent earthquake follows a 7.4-magnitude quake off Fukushima in March 2022, emphasizing Japan’s ongoing vulnerability to seismic events.
