Mumbai: A 56-year-old woman named Reema Mukesh Patel, a resident of Mulund in northeast Mumbai, was saved from a suicide attempt on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, also known as Atal Setu, on Friday evening. The dramatic rescue, captured on CCTV, showed the quick actions of a cab driver and police personnel, who prevented Patel from jumping off the bridge.

In the footage, Patel is seen sitting on the bridge’s safety barrier, where she throws an object into the sea and then attempts to leap off. A vigilant cab driver intervened just in time, pulling her back from the edge. Moments later, a patrolling police vehicle arrived, and officers joined the driver in securing Patel, bringing the tense situation under control after a minute-long rescue effort.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar commended the swift response of the officers involved, identifying them as Lalit Shirsat, Kiran Mahtre, Yash Sonawane, and Mayur Patil. “Their prompt action at Atal Setu saved a life,” Phansalkar stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He urged citizens to cherish life and avoid impulsive actions, reminding them that their loved ones deserve more consideration.

This incident follows a similar tragedy from the previous month when a 38-year-old engineer, K Shriniwas, ended his life by jumping off the same bridge. CCTV footage from that incident showed Shriniwas driving to the Nhava Sheva side of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, parking his car, and tragically taking his own life.
