An army soldier was reportedly stripped and brutally assaulted while in police custody in Jaipur, Rajasthan, sparking outrage after the incident was brought to light by state minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Monday, August 12, 2024. Following a visit to the Shipra Path police station, where the assault occurred, Rathore reprimanded the police officers involved and immediately escalated the matter to the Director General of Police (DGP).
The DGP, U.R. Sahoo, confirmed that a sub-inspector and three constables involved in the incident had been removed from their posts and an inquiry was ordered. He further explained that the police had conducted a raid on an illegal hookah bar the previous night, during which several individuals, including the soldier, were detained.
“The Jaipur police commissioner has taken swift action by shunting the sub-inspector and three constables to police lines, and an inquiry is now underway,” DGP Sahoo stated.
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Rajasthan’s Sainik Kalyan Minister and a former Army officer, visited the police station to confront the officers responsible for the heinous act. He condemned the police’s conduct in the strongest terms.
“A deeply disturbing incident has come to my attention where a soldier, who is currently serving in Kashmir and was visiting Jaipur, was subjected to the utmost humiliation. He was stripped, beaten with sticks, and forced to sit among civilians while some policemen made him repeat that the police are the ‘baap’ (superior) of the Indian Army,” Rathore told reporters, his anger palpable.
“This is an appalling reflection of the vile mentality of those few individuals who committed this despicable act. I have served in uniform, and I hold the Rajasthan police in high regard. But this kind of behavior is intolerable and must be met with the strictest possible action,” he asserted.
Rathore underscored the seriousness of the incident, emphasizing that the medical report corroborates the soldier’s claims of being assaulted by the police. “An Indian Army soldier was unlawfully detained and mercilessly beaten by five police officers, without any justifiable cause. This flagrant abuse of power by law enforcement officials cannot and will not be tolerated,” Rathore declared.
The minister also confirmed that he had spoken directly with the Director General of Police, who assured him that stringent action would be taken against those responsible for this gross violation of the law.
