USA: Rogue Wave Surprises Ventura, Injuring Eight and Flooding Streets
Rough weather along the California coast led to a dangerous situation in Ventura. A surprise “rogue” wave crashed over the seawUall, flooding the area, injuring eight people, and carrying debris and vehicles up the street. Cities warned residents about the perilous waves caused by a Pacific storm, reaching up to 40 feet in some areas. A high surf warning remained in place, extending into Southern California with waves of 15 to 20 feet. The storm also brought rain and strong winds, impacting travel.
In Santa Cruz, waves of 25 to 30 feet prompted urgent advisories, leading to the closure of the Santa Cruz Wharf, Main Beach, and Cowell Beach. Low-lying areas experienced flooding, and officials warned of rip currents and “sneaker” waves. The focus was on keeping people indoors and away from the coastline for safety.
Ventura County closed some public beaches, with the city of Oxnard shutting down its beaches through Sunday. In response to the high surf, fire officials in Ventura County worked to construct a seven-foot-high, one-mile-long berm along the beaches using heavy equipment to guard against further damage.
Overall, caution was emphasized, urging people to stay away from the water’s edge, rocks, and piers. The storm’s impact was expected to persist, with dangerous conditions forecasted into the weekend.
