The police in Burlington, Vermont, have arrested a suspect, Jason J. Eaton, 48, in connection with the shooting of three Palestinian students near the University of Vermont. The incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.
The victims, students in their 20s attending American universities, were shot by a white man while walking near the university. Two victims were wearing Palestinian kaffiyehs. The families of the victims are urging authorities to investigate the shooting as a hate crime. Two of the victims are in stable condition, while the third sustained more serious injuries. The suspect is expected to be arraigned on Monday. The shooting occurred as the U.S. sees a rise in Islamophobic and antisemitic incidents.
The victims are Ahmed at Trinity College in Connecticut, Awartani studies at Brown University, and Abdalhamid at Haverford College in Pennsylvania.
