In December 1989, Ruth Buchanan, 52, was struck and killed by a stolen vehicle in Charlotte, North Carolina. The driver fled without rendering aid, leaving the case unsolved for over three decades. Recent breakthroughs in forensic technology, particularly DNA analysis from a marijuana joint found in the car, led to Herbert Stanback, 68, being identified as the suspect. Stanback, already serving a 22-year prison sentence for another crime, admitted to the hit-and-run after being confronted with the evidence. He was charged with felony hit-and-run and sentenced to an additional two years, concurrent with his current sentence. Despite earlier leads and physical evidence, the case stalled until early 2022, when a Crime Stoppers tip prompted further investigation. Stanback confessed to driving the vehicle, which he abandoned at a nearby motel.
